Retrofit for Legacy Universal Testing Machines PDF Print E-mail

The Bi-00-300 retrofit kit is intended for legacy hydraulic universal testing machines
(UTMs) that continue to be in widespread use in industry and educational institutions.
After the retrofit, these machines can render the same flexibility and measurement
precision that one associates with state-of the-art digitally controlled servo-hydraulic
test systems. Apart from conventional tension-compression testing, they can also be
used for more sophisticated tests such as single-specimen J1c to determine brittle and ductile fracture properties and also for cyclic stress-strain control.

Standard Features

• Retains old and familiar load frame, fixtures, oil and pump.
• Adds digitally controlled servo-hydraulics and instrumentation.
• Compatible with wide range of commercially available transducers.
• Ready-to-use software for a variety of tests.
• MS-Office Interface for test reporting and data storage.
• Affordable alternative to heavy capital investment.

Retrofit

1 - Wiring to enable emergency safety trip of pump and servo, 2 - pressure
Line hose from pump, 3 - return line hose to tank, 4 - pressure hose into
actuator, 5 - optional hose to connect port B on double acting cylinders,
6 - cable to pressure transducer, 7 - cables to other optional transducers
Including load cell, extensometer, COD gage, etc, 8 - cable to servo-valve

Who needs this retrofit?
Industry and educational institutions worldwide continue to use legacy universal testing machines (UTMs) that use WWII era technology built around a stiff load frame and a moving crosshead displaced through a hydraulic press. A pump delivers oil at selected flow to ensure smooth crosshead movement at selected rate. Oil pressure calibrated against force serves as load indicator. While these systems meet the load and displacement requirements of tension-compression testing, they may appear obsolete given lack of precision in readouts and lack of servo-control capability using high-resolution feedback from transducers such as extensometers and load cells. The Bi-00-300 retrofit kit overcomes these limitations by incorporating state-of-the-art digital control and data acquisition.

Configuration

The Bi-00-300 retrofit kit consists of:
1. Bi-02-210-XX Servo-hydraulic service manifold. This unit is located between the load frame and the pump. It is provided with four hoses, two that connect to
the actuator’s Port A and Port B (only on double acting actuators), the pressure output from the pump and the tank (return line). XX denotes servo-valve
capacity. Select one of 04, 12, 24 or 40 (LPM), to match with 150% of maximum pump delivery. Model Bi-02-210-12 suits most requirements. A 5 m hose set
forms part of this unit. It includes custom adapters for connection to actuator and pump.
2. Bi-04-2350 Controller. The controller includes all the electronics and cabling required for the retrofit and enables use of the existing system without any
additional hardware components. It also permits the direct connection of additional low-level transducers for displacement and force measurement, such as
LVDT, load cell, extensometer, etc. An E-Stop button is provided for emergency stoppage of the test in the event of an emergency. The controller can be
directly connected to any industry standard PC with USB interface. PC does not form part of the supply unless specifically requested.
3. Bi-08-101 Application Software. This package is required to control the retrofitted test system through user-friendly graphics interface, calibrate force and
displacement readouts against references and perform fully automated tests to determine tensile, compression and even cyclic properties. Apart from the
kernel code for machine control, the package implements the Global Data Sharing (GDS) environment on the host PC. Using GDS, real-time bridge is
established with the MS-Office application package. Thus, test data can be collected, processed and reported using the MS-XL VB-macros feature. The open source
GDS applications can be edited by the user to customize the test process and adapt it to emerging requirements. The MS-Office license is however not part of supply.
